I always knew that there was more than met the eye when a
student walks through my classroom door. However, after reading the Taylor
textbook, listening to Dr. Cantu’s lectures, reading the case studies, and
discussing diversity via the blog and Google doc, I have realized there is A
LOT more about the topic of diversity that I did not know. I have always had the
want to include more multi-cultural, or diverse, literature into my classroom,
and this course has given me the cause to do so immediately. I could go on and
on about all of the things I have learned, or were reminded of, but overall, my
appreciation for including diversity education in my classroom would be number
one.
Final Question: What is one thing you have learned from this course that you will take back to your building staff or your individual classroom?
I will share the booklet on 101 Tools for Tolerance. I also will keep some of the other factors in mind that we talked about. In particular, I want to talk more with parents, especially the ELL's so that I can find out more about my students.
ReplyDeleteGreat question! I am going to be sure to include opportunities in the curriculum for my students not only to learn about multicultural education, but also to serve in some capacity and practice the open-mindedness that we discuss in class. I also really want to incorporate some multi-cultural literature and language content in my English class this year. I was looking up resources and I would really like for my students to read The House on Mango Street. It has been a pleasure reading your thoughts!
